I was browsing the Farmer’s Almanac website today. You can enter your zip code and it will give you information for your area. I was looking for the signs of spring. As, most of us who live in Minnesota are ready for it!

I learned that today, March 26th, at 11:08 am in Minneapolis, the new Moon just started. Tomorrow will be the 1st day of the Moon cycle. This next new moon will occur on April 24th at 10:24 pm.

During one lunar month, the phases progress across the Moon, with the area of light or shadow moving from the right to the left in the northern hemisphere. Today there is 0% percent illumination. Starting tomorrow the illumination will grow starting from the right.

I also learned that, historically, Native Americans who lived in the area that is now the northern and eastern United States kept track of the seasons by giving names to the full Moons. The name for the new Moon related to what happens during that time. Today’s new moon is called the Full Worm Moon.

Each full Moon name was applied to the entire month in which it occurred. At this time of year in our area, the ground begins to soften and earthworm casts reappear. This is the time when robins return from the southern states and Central America where they migrated to in the fall. Their diet consists of insects, fruit, berries and worms!

The new Moon in March is also known as the Sap Moon. This is the time when maple sap begins to flow and the annual tapping of maple trees begins.

Grandpa and I are excited that they are coming. We are going to pick up all the supplies we need on the way home from work. We need eggs, oil, vinegar, food coloring and 16 oz. plastic Solo cups. Oh, we need one more thing, pizza!

Believe it or not, there are recipes for cooking eggs in the shell! A popular misconception about hard-boiled eggs is how long you actually “boil” the eggs. When making hard-boiled eggs it is best to take them off the heat as soon as the water comes to a full boil. The egg actually cooks while standing in the hot water! The texture of the yolk is determined by the length of time the egg remains in the hot water. The time ranges from 2 minutes for soft-boiled eggs, to 15 minutes for hard.

Follow this easy recipe for cooking hard-boiled eggs for coloring.
1. Place eggs in sauce pan in a single layer.
2. Cover eggs with cold water. Water level should be at least one inch above the eggs.
3. Cover pan with lid and bring to boil. Cook on medium heat setting.
4. Remove from heat as soon as the water comes to a full boil.
5. Let eggs stand in hot water for 15 minutes.
6. Drain off water.
7. Immediately cover eggs with cold water.
8. Let stand and allow eggs to cool completely.
9. The eggs must be completely cool and dry, to decorate successfully.

Note: Always be certain to use food-safe dyes when coloring eggs that will be eaten.

Make your own dye by combining 1 tablespoon of food coloring with 2 teaspoons vinegar in a cup that is deep enough to hold an egg. We are going to use 16 oz plastic Solo cups. Add 1 cup of water.

When you put the egg in – the liquid will cover the egg. Gently place the egg into the cup. Use a soupspoon to place the egg in dye, to avoid cracking. The longer you leave the egg in the dye, the darker the color shade. When you remove the egg, pat dry with a paper towel and place in a holder. You can make egg-drying stands, by cutting a paper towel tube into sections.

We are going use crayons to decorate our eggs. The grandkids are going to color on the Easter eggs before placing it in the dye. The wax will resist the dye and their picture will show through.

Another idea we are going to try is creating “swirl” eggs. For these eggs we are going to mix 1 tablespoon of oil, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of food coloring. Add enough water to cover the egg, stir quickly with a spoon and gently put in the egg. Quickly, swirl egg around with the soupspoon and pull the egg out. Pat it dry with paper towel.

Grandpa is going to take lots of pictures! Capturing these moments will create memories for years to come.
